The latest version of Android is finally out in the wild, and it’s called Android Oreo, as most people guessed. Google, for some reason, made the decision to reveal the new OS’ name and launch details at an event in New York City, coinciding with the eclipse last night.
Google has traditionally named its major Android releases after sweet treats, starting with Android 1.5 ‘Cupcake’. Android 4.4 ‘KitKat’’ was the only one so far to receive a brand-associated name, with the others being more generic, but Oreo is such a recognizable name for a sweet snack starting with ‘O’ that Google likely didn’t have any other choice with Android 8.0.
